Basso Vox Brings Innovative Chamber Music to the Old School Baptist Church July 3
Friday, July 3 at 7:30 PM | Old School Baptist Church in Denver, NY | Double bassist Nina Bernat and bassoonist Eleni Katz
DENVER, NEW YORK – It's going to be 'all about the bass' on Friday, July 3 at 7:30 PM when Basso Vox, double bassist Nina Bernat and bassoonist Eleni Katz, bring their innovative chamber music program to the Old School Baptist Church in Denver, NY. This boundary-pushing duo performs ingenious transcriptions and original compositions that reveal the full expressive possibilities of the double bass and bassoon.
Basso Vox, Latin for 'Bass Voice,' takes its name seriously. Both Bernat and Katz are winners of the prestigious Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition, a recognition that speaks to their individual artistry and the remarkable chemistry they've developed together.
The duo is committed to pairing canonical works with contemporary voices and their program, "How Low Can You Go?" spans more than three centuries of music, from Bach's early 18th-century suites to more contemporary composers such as Reena Esmail, Adolphus Hailstork. The inclusion of Rossini's beloved opera arias, originally written for singers, is itself a statement: these instruments have voices, and Basso Vox knows how to use them.
About the Artists:
Nina Bernat is a double bassist whose awards include a 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Barbash Bach Competition, the International Society of Bassists Solo Competition, and the Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition. She has performed as a concerto soloist with the Minnesota Orchestra and given debut recitals at both Carnegie Hall and Merkin Hall. A faculty member at Stony Brook University, Bernat brings to Basso Vox a rare combination of technical command and the distinctly vocal approach to melody that defines the duo's sound.
Eleni Katz is a bassoonist hailed for her "thoughtful and expressive" playing by the San Diego Union Tribune and her "uncannily human" approach to music making by The Royal Gazette. A winner of the Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition, Katz has appeared with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Camerata Pacifica, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and La Jolla Music Society's SummerFest, and performed in venues from Colombia to Carnegie Hall. She is currently bassoon teaching faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Mead Witter School of Music and is a proud alumna of the New World Symphony, Yale School of Music, and University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Together, Bernat and Katz bring formidable credentials and a shared creative vision to reveal the full expressive range of their instruments and expand the chamber music repertoire for this singular combination of voices. Tickets and information available by visiting roxburyartsgroup.org.
