GILBOA/CONESVILLE - Here we are, in the last week of July. The weather has been great for mowing lawns and gardening. On Saturday after all the mowing was completed, I got the weed whacker out to finish up. The last part was along the back of the barn. I was almost done, when suddenly an aggressive nasty yellow jacket flew toward my face. I was hit three times. I tried and tried to get away from it to no avail. It kept attacking me in my face.  Finally, and thanking God for my barrels that were full of water, I quickly threw water all over myself and in the air. That nasty bee disappeared. The bites did not. I am not allergic to bees but even so, I quickly got back in the house and swallowed a Benadryl.  Then I got out the ice. Here it is Monday and I am still nursing the swelling on my lip, cheek, and forehead. I guess I will no longer be weed whacking behind the barn for the rest of the season.

If you are looking for a place to go for dinner on a Friday evening, you need to stop by Tracy’s Café in Grand Gorge on Friday, July 31, 5-7pm Tracy will be holding a specials dinner consisting of three different full dinners only. This will take place every Friday evening.  Her menu is available during regular weekdays until 2pm except for Tuesdays when she is closed. If you need more information, you can call 607 588 4333.

Last Tuesday I, along with several others enjoyed an evening at the Gilboa Museum where we heard a talk from Michael Solin of Solinsky’s Meat. This talk was on preserved meat that Michael and staff do and sell in their store in Stamford on Main Street. We got the occasion to taste some of their delicious smoked meat. Lots of questions were asked and Michael answered each one graciously. Light refreshments were served following his talk. 

The 85-foot culvert is being put together on Flat Creek Road by our Town crew and in coordination with the Schoharie County Highway Department. I believe it has been placed on the spot while they are putting it together. Hopefully we will once again have the lower part of Flat Creek Road opened before winter sets in. 

Everyone at Flat Creek Church welcomed Ed Chatfield back this past Sunday.  Had has been on the caring list for some time and has not been able to attend worship services. He has been a devoted member for many years. Ed, we all wish you the best to stay healthy. Flat Creek Church will be having their annual picnic at Mine Kill State Park Pavillion on August 15, 1:00pm.  All are welcome to attend just bring a dish to pass. Hot dogs will be available.   

I am happy to tell everyone that the unveiling of the New Gilboa historic marker and Gilboa Dam Overlook opening to the public was held on Friday, July 24. The event began at 11:00am with over 65+ people standing/sitting in front of the Town Hall. After a welcome message from Supervisor Alicia Terry, she then introduced each speaker beginning with Senator Peter Obracker, followed by Assemblyman Chris Tague, NYC Acting Deputy Commissioner David Warne, and Gilboa Historical Society President Kristen Wyckoff. With remarks from Supervisor Terry, and before the unveiling of the marker she then introduced GHS board member Lee Hudson who read a message from the Pomeroy Foundation that funded the marker. It was then unveiled. The marker tells it all.  Supervisor Terry gave the closing remarks. Following the unveiling, everyone enjoyed refreshments inside while some got on the shuttle to head to the Gilboa Dam. As soon as all arrived everyone got to view the dam while lots of pictures were taken.  The area is very modern looking and the view from the overlook is perfect. People walked about reading the posted displays and were ever so happy to be able to stand at the overlook to view the finished work. If you are around Gilboa, you need to stop by and take a look. 

With a lot going on in Conesville on Saturday you may want to join in the day there. First, it is the Conesville/Gilboa Community Garage sales where you can pick up a map and follow it to the places that are holding their sale. The UMC in Conesville are hosting a takeout Chicken BBQ from 11:00am until all are sold out. ½ Chicken $10.00. Preorders need to be picked up by 1:00pm or they will be resold. Then at 1:00pm there will be a vintage baseball game which takes place on the vintage Buel Farm at 198 Brand Road. The Conesville Historical Society is hosting the Fleischmanns Mountain Athletic Club and the Nine of Ulster County for an exciting vintage baseball game.  It will be played in a picturesque hayfield using the 1864 Rules of Play. Be sure to bring a lawn chair or blanket. Food will be available to purchase during this great game. Also the Historical Society would like to thank Margeaux Ringwald of Durham for the donation of a beautiful Americana Backpack, lunch box and pencil case of her own design which you can purchase raffle tickets for. This is to help Conesville’s huge 250th birthday of America’s celebration to be held on September 19. Need more information on these happenings go to conesvillehistoricalsociety@gmail.com.

The Gilboa Historical Society is very active as well. This past Saturday they had author Peter Brannen. Peter explained the causes and effects of the five major catastrophes that nearly wiped-out life many millions of years ago. That was a great talk. This coming Saturday, August 1, over thirty artists will be showing their beautiful artwork covering the walls of the community room titled “Birds, Bugs & Blooms.” This event takes place from 4-6pm with light refreshments available. While walking about inside you may want to head to the attached deck to listen to some great music from sax/guitar duo of Elijah Shiffer & Dylan Delgindice.

Saturday, August 8, 4:30pm the Gilboa Museum will hold a movie “The Maltese Falcon” starring Humphrey Bogart and Mary Astor, and Peter Lorre. Event is free, even the popcorn. Donations are always welcome. 

Sunken City Cidery: Extended hours 3-9pm Friday, July 31, Monthly Think and Sip 7-9pm and the Stryker food truck on site. Saturday, August 1, 7-9pm all day music festival with music from Ericson Holt, Randy Miritello & the Hop City, Hellcats, Red haired Strangers, Six Mile Sundown with also Artisanal Vendo0rs right on site along with some great food from The Stryker and Trailhead food truck. Don’t forget to purchase tickets for this great event. August 2, Sunken City Cidery: Sunday Blues featuring Trevor Collins & Ericson Holt. Food trucks The Stryker and Cousins Maine Lobster. 

Sunday Worship Services: 

Gilboa Methodist Church: 9:00am located on 990V, Gilboa with Pastor Dawn Richards. 

Flat Creek Baptist Church: Flat Creek Road, Gilboa with Pastor Paul Overbaugh, Sunday School 9:30am, Worship Service 10:30am. Coffee and fellowship follows in the church hall. Women’s Bible Study takes place on Thursdays 10:00am at Robinson Terrace Assisted Living Buntline Drive, Stamford. 

Conesville UM Chapel: Worship service on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month.

The 2nd and 4th Sundays the Chapel is open from 9-11am for worship and prayer time. A peaceful time with music, community, and games for children and just gathering in faith to share with each other.
