This past Tuesday morning with the temperature once again in the nineties, I decided to get the air conditioners in the windows. From what the weather people are saying Thursday it should drop to the sixties. There sure is never a dull moment with what is going on with the weather.
There is always a lot going on in our local towns this Memorial Weekend. You just may want to take a ride to the Sunken City Cidery especially on Saturday, May 23, 3-6pm. Maine Lobster will be rolling in with Lobster Rolls and more. Fresh lobster favorites, cold hard cider, great mountain views and all the laid-back vibes anyone could ask for. Live music with the Sunset Riders should make it a great afternoon. (See upcoming events for more)
On the way to the cidery be sure to stop at the Gilboa Museum on Saturday, May 23 as the season begins. “Off the Wall” art show. Before that at the Museum is a new exhibit “Labor of Love” Gilboa Farm & Family” beginning at noon followed by their opening reception 4-6pm.
The weather on Saturday could not have been any better for our Women’s Conference that was held at Flat Creek Baptist Church. Twenty + women gathered in the fellowship hall to enjoy coffee and muffins before the conference began. The theme was “Trust and Obey” The front of the program depicted a four-season tree. Each group of leaves were spring, summer, fall and branches for winter. The tables held long sprays of lovely spring and summer flowers, fall leaves, and evergreen branches for the winter season. Little rocks painted by Kathy Lanaro were among the flowers. Kathy also painted a tree on several separate canvases which were then made into a cross and placed on the wall. Each individual canvas depicted spring, summer, fall, and winter. Quest speaker Kim Weidner welcomed everyone. After the welcome we all went into the sanctuary where Karen Overbaugh gave the opening prayer. Hymns were sung with so many resounding voices coming from all the women. After that we then went back into the fellowship hall where Kim began her session of taking us through the four seasons with trusting in God. Spring was a session when you thought about your life from youth to 18years, Summer was young adulthood 18-35 years, Fall was mature adulthood 35-60, and lastly Winter the final season 60+. Each session while Kim spoke we filled in with our own thoughts, Personal Highs/Lows & Joys/Woes, Trust Journey, and Fruitful Obedience. Each of us wrote our thoughts under each of the three categories while she spoke. Kim brought us a new meaning of trusting and obeying God. Every word from her held everyone’s attention right to the very end of the session. Taking a break for a delicious lunch that everyone enjoyed. Then it was back into the sanctuary for more hymn singing and then the last session with Kim leading with all of us ending with more hymns. Three-gals Kim, Kathy and Debbie who led the hymns asked if anyone would like to have their favorite hymn sung. I asked the three if they would do one. Well, I thought the rafters were going to come down as those three sang and harmonized with “How Great Thou Art”. We all joined in singing the last two verses. As we were leaving each one received a beautifully wrapped bag with several lovely gifts inside. A huge thank you goes out to the ladies and Kim who worked ever so hard to make this conference possible. It was certainly a day to remember. Following the conference arriving home, daughter Diane arrived and we got the lawn mowed. With the rain this past week it was difficult to know whether to mow or not. After the lawn was done, I drove the tractor up to the church and mowed that as well.
Congratulations to Johnathan Pickett on his graduation/ On Saturday his parents David and Heidi, brother Thomas, and Polly Hallock attended the 109th Commencement at SUNY Delhi for the graduation ceremony. Jonathan graduated with a Bachelor of Technology degree, Cum Laude. His degree being from the Mechatronics Department. Heidi tells me they are so proud of him because he worked ever so hard to achieve this degree. Following the ceremony, David and Heidi hosted a dinner at their home here in Flat Creek. Bill and Alicia Terry joined in to celebrate this wonderful graduation.
Monday evening the Conesville Historical Society hosted Sue Rucano who spoke on “Discovering Your Roots” and Hint and Tips for finding your family tree. Sue had a screen show which was ever so interesting. Finding your relatives takes a lot of time but in the end, it is certainly worth all the information you can gather. Ancestory.com is a great place to start. However, Sue gave us an insight into so many more places you can research to find your relatives. Probably most of us have relatives who come from another country. My grandparents on my mom’s side came from Zelin Czechoslovakia and on my dad’s side they came from, Pisa in Italy. With my maiden name being Bucchioni I believe there are just over twenty people with that last name. I am sure most of them are my relatives. I plan on working on finding out more about them during the winter months. Sue and Debbie Hill’s family date back to the early 1800’s. The screen depicted lots of information on them. Everyone enjoyed Sue’s talk. It was superbly told.
