Schoharie County Board of Elections Launches Student Election Inspector Initiative
New program offers high school students hands-on civic experience while supporting local elections
SCHOHARIE — The Schoharie County Board of Elections is pleased to announce a new initiative designed to encourage civic engagement among high school students by providing them with the opportunity to serve as Election Inspectors.
Three Schoharie County high school students have successfully completed the required training and will work alongside experienced election inspectors at designated polling locations during the November 3, 2026 General Election.
The initiative provides students with a unique opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of election procedures, voter assistance, and the safeguards that help ensure fair, accurate, and transparent elections. Working alongside seasoned election inspectors, students will experience the responsibilities involved in administering elections and the importance of public service.
Authorized under New York State Education Law § 3207-a, the program permits eligible 17-year-old students, with parental consent and school district approval, to serve as election inspectors. In addition to promoting civic awareness, the experience allows students to develop valuable workplace skills, demonstrate community involvement, and strengthen their academic résumés and future college or employment applications.
"Our goal is to provide students with more than just an opportunity to work on Election Day. We want them to gain a greater understanding of how elections are conducted and an appreciation for the important role citizens play in maintaining the integrity of the process," said Schoharie County Election Commissioners Ken Schweigard and Terry Burton.
The Board views this initial participation by three students as the beginning of a program it hopes to expand in future elections. Through continued collaboration with local school districts, the Board hopes to increase student involvement and foster a greater interest in civic responsibility among younger residents.
The Schoharie County Board of Elections remains committed to providing fair, accurate, and accessible elections while encouraging greater public understanding and participation in the democratic process.
