Stamford Mayors Cup Soccer Kicks off Aug. 31
STAMFORD – This is the 50th anniversary year of the annual Stamford Mayor's Cup Soccer Tournament and the host booster club, the Stamford Central School Booster Club is seeking any old photos previous players may have.
Athletes from 14 soccer teams will start the season Aug. 31 as the tournament kicks off at Russ Archibald Memorial Field. The games start at 10 a.m. and finish at 5:30 p.m. with five opening round games. Action continues on Sept. 1 and 2, then moved to Saturday, Sept. 5 with second round action for the girls and two more matches for the boys. The tournament finishes on Sept. 12.
Unfortunately, according to Brittany Westcott, who has taken over athletic director duties at SCS, there will be no games under the lights this year. All games will take place at Archibald Field.
Because there are only six boys teams this season, which team claims the title will be based on a point system. A win equals two points, a tie equals one point and a loss is 0 points. If there is a tie, it will be decided by a goal differential, if it is still tied, it will be decided by the head-to-head results whenever the tied teams play each other.
The girls will play through brackets as in the past.
Defending champions will be the Edmeston boys, who have won the title for the past two years. and are looking for a three-peat. Another win would allow them to retire a trophy. They defeated SK/Andes 1-0 for the title last year. On the girls' coin the Franklin/Unatego girls will be defending the title, defeating Stamford/Jefferson 3-0 for the title.
