Gilboa/Conesville News by Dorothy Pickett 14 July 2026

It seems like every other week I learn that someone I have known for a very long time has passed away. As I was reading co-correspondent Ginny Gurley’s column this morning, I learned that Patricia Smith had passed away. Pat was in the class of 58’ at GCCS. My class of 57’ were very close to that class. We always invited them to attend our class reunion for many years. Sincere sympathy to the family. I understand arrangements are pending for August.

Here we are in the middle of July. The months seem to be flying by ever so quickly. I don’t know about the other correspondents, editor and those who write for our Mountain Eagle, it seems like we just get our column off to the paper and here we are doing it again. I love doing it. I know so well that all the rest feel the same way.  Yes, sometimes we make mistakes but then again there is only one who is perfect. I am sure you know who that one is. The best part is when you meet up with someone while out and about and they tell you they just love the local town columns and the whole paper, it means a lot to all of us. For myself, I thank you.

I am sure a lot of you listen to Windham station WRIP especially in the early morning with Joe Loverro. Joe was in Albany Medical Center and is now in rehab. Knowing Joe I am sure he would love to hear from his listeners. So… sending him a card I know would help with his recovery. Cards can be sent to Evergreen Commons Rehab. Center, 1070 Luther Road, East Greenbush NY 12061 Att: Joe Loverro. We are all saying prayers that Joe will soon be back on the air “fit as a fiddle”. Thanks to Jay and the crew for filling in and keeping us informed of Joe’s health issue and all the everyday happenings in our local areas.

I was told the event with Brian Weiss’s talk on making bread kept the full attention of everyone at the Gilboa Museum last Tuesday evening. With the community room full of people Brian spoke about his bread making and just how successful the business has become.

This past Friday evening I drove to the Conesville Chapel for the Catskill Mountain String Band’s performance. It was a packed house with well over 60+ people filling the pews.  Before the four men began, everyone got the chance to enjoy some delicious strawberry shortcake with homemade biscuits.  We sat in the pews while the band began to warm up playing some great bluegrass tunes. Then they really began to entertain us. Each one of those men played their instruments, sang, and told some stories. Anyone could tell they truly loved to entertain and oh my gosh could they play those instruments. What a wonderful performance it was. People were clapping, silently singing along, and just nodding and stomping their feet as they sat enjoying the music. This event was sponsored by the Conesville Historical Society and a very nice grant from Create. Many thanks to the gals who served the fantastic shortcake. Many thanks to those who left a donation even though the event was free. The Historical society’s next event is July 29 a cruise on the Dutch Apple cruise ship in Albany on the Hudson. Cost is $35.00 per person. For more information contact the Conesville Historical Society’s web page.

The Gilboa Fest was well attended on Sunday. Seventeen vendors along with the Stryker Roads Sunken City Cidery, the Trailhead Food Truck from Muddy Brook Farm across from Vroman’s Nose on Rte. 30 and two Psychics.  Canopies went up all over the lovely grounds at the museum. Vendors also set up under the pavilion and on the porch of the museum building. Dr Stein, well known for knowing so much about fossils, got the chance to tell some of those who brought their finds from local creek beds exactly what they were. People walked all around throughout the day carrying their bags of treasures they bought from vendors. The son dogs entertained everyone with some great music that began at 1:00pm.  The food from Trailhead was delicious! Kudos to Linda Karlsen who heads up the events. Linda had it down to a science as to where the vendors would set up, who they were and what they would be selling. All in all, it was a wonderful day with bright sunshine, a cool breeze and so many happy faces. The next event at the Museum will be on Saturday, July 18 when Maureen Taylor “The Photo Detective” will give her talk. That event will begin at 1:00 pm in the community room.

The same day as the Gilboa Fest a huge Antique Car show was well attended at the Power Authority’s Visitors Center on Route 30. This is an annual event and with many antique cars one could not let pass up that event either.
