Gilboa/Conesville News by Dorothy Pickett - 29 May 2026

A huge Happy Birthday goes out to WRIP Windham radio station announcer Joe Loverro on May 31. Joe from all of us here in our local towns, we wish you the very best of Birthdays ever!  Thanks to you for all you do keeping us on top of news, weather, birthdays, and events every day. Enjoy your special day Blessed in the Lord.

Condolences to the family of Shirley Pricolo with her passing on May 12, 2026. Calling hours were on Tuesday with a funeral on Wednesday. In earlier years Shirley attended Flat Creek Baptist Church.

The weather for this past Memorial Weekend was rainy and cold. I noticed some campers going by on Sunday heading back to the city early with the not so nice weather. Monday morning was cloudy and dreary. Then around 10:30am it started to clear up here in Gilboa or at least it got a little brighter. Being I was under the weather on Sunday, I decided to stay home on Monday. Prattsville and Grand Gorge held their parades. Lots more towns cancelled their parade and held their memorial services inside. I remember distinctly as a little girl attending Memorial Day parades along with so many other ones. My dad was a Tuckahoe Policeman so my mom, sister and two brothers would always be there to watch him march. He loved doing it and was ever so proud to be in perfect step with all his buddies. As he neared where we were standing, I would wave my flag, and he would always give me that special wink and smile.  After the parade mom and dad would hold a clam bake at our home. Both the Tuckahoe and Eastchester Police forces and their families would all bring their special dish to pass and just enjoy the rest of the day remembering those who fought and died for us to keep us safe. To all our Veterans we thank you.

The Gilboa Methodist Church’s Chicken BBQ was a success with well over forty-five halves and salads being sold at the Grand Gorge Firehouse this past Sunday. On May 31 there will be coffee time after their 9:00am worship service at the church on 990V.

Saturday, during the rain I stopped at the Gilboa Museum to view the display of the “Labor of Love” Gilboa Farm and Family Animals” and the “Off the Wall” art show in the community room. If you have not been there you need to stop by on the weekend for this ongoing event. As I was leaving, I could not help but notice the huge parking lot full of cars at the Sunken City Cidery down at the Stryker Farm. I am sure people wanted to be inside on such a rainy, cold day. so that was a great place to be.

This past week Eric McClaughlin from Brush be Gone cleared my field from the barn to the Parsonage. It was so good to see everything being chipped, cut up and cleared. I was enthralled by how Eric’s machinery worked to clear the field. Now as you drive by you can see more of my lake. Eric said as he was doing the job the Deer came out of the woods and were very inquisitive about what he was doing. I was so glad that the Barbed wire fence and posts had been taken out earlier. Now the deer can roam without having to jump the fence or even go under it.  The job was worth it all.

Thursday, twenty-two seniors met at the Conesville Firehouse for their monthly meeting. Hannah from TP’ S Restaurant in Stamford catered the luncheon. The tables were decorated in Red, White, and Blue. Some came wearing those colors as well.  Pastor Dottie conducted the meeting. She handed out a questionnaire for all of us to fill out as to the future of the club. The results will be at our next meeting.  We had as speaker a gal named Sue who trains dogs. After speaking she brought in two of the dogs for all of us to meet. The one little guy walked around greeting everyone. Then he ended up on Carolyn Stryker’s lap for the rest of Sue’s talk. He cuddled and just warmed up to her right until we were all ready to leave. Laurie Gustin won the 50/50.
