History at the Old Stone Fort - Artillery Button and Dog-Powered Treadmill

British Royal Artillery Button

This button was worn on the uniform of a British Royal Artillery Soldier. It features three stacked cannons on a shield with three cannonballs above them. Found at Fort George (now Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada) in 1907. Companies from the British Royal Artillery served during

General Burgoyne’s 1777 Campaign. These interesting items were sent to us by the Old Stone Fort’s Clay Edmunds.

Donated by Donald A. Keefer.

Dog-Powered Treadmill

This machine was patented on June 28, 1881, by Harder Manufacturing Company. It was used by a large dog or sheep to power a butter churn, washing machine or another small machine and would range up to two horsepower. These were replaced by small gasoline engines before

electricity became available on farms.
