Making Merit Series on Tibetan Buddhist Art Sept. 12 & 19

MARGARETVILLE — Fairview Public Library will welcome internationally exhibited artist and educator Roshan Houshmand for Making Merit, a two-part series exploring Tibetan Buddhist art, symbolism, creativity, mindfulness, and meditation.

Houshmand will be at Fairview Public Library, 43 Walnut Street in Margaretville, on September 12 from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m and September 19 from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. The series is free and open to the public.

The two-part Making Merit series will begin with an informal presentation on Tibetan Buddhist art, including traditional motifs and symbolism. The second session will build on those ideas through painting and drawing, giving participants an opportunity to explore a creative process with intention and awareness while incorporating mindfulness and meditation.

Participants should plan to attend both sessions, as the second session builds on the ideas and concepts introduced in the first. Space for the workshop is limited.

Houshmand brings an international perspective to the series. She has studied traditional Tibetan Buddhist thangka drawing and painting at Shechen Monastery’s Tsering Art School in Nepal. Her work has been exhibited and collected internationally, including at the Boca Raton Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern European Art (MEAM) in Barcelona, Taubman Gallery at Michigan University, and museums and galleries in Uruguay and Italy.

Houshmand holds a BA from Bennington College in Vermont and an MA and MFA from Rosary College Graduate School of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy. She has also studied in New York City with Julio Alpuy of the Joaquin Torres Garcia School of Universal Constructivism from Uruguay.

A recipient of numerous grants and awards, Houshmand is an online adjunct drawing instructor at Southern New Hampshire University. She lives and works in Andes, New York.

The Making Merit project is made possible with funds from the Delaware County Arts Grants, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered in Delaware County by the Roxbury Arts Group.
