STAMFORD - More than 100 participants took part in the 16th Annual “Mom” McGrail Walk/Run 5K in Stamford Aug. 1. The day kicked off with a kids’ run at the old railroad station at the bottom of Railroad Avenue, the location was also the finish line.
According to Liz McGrail, one of 12 biological children of “Mom” McGrail who passed away from cancer, the money raised for the event goes directly back into the community.
“College students from any of the 11 schools in the Delaware League can apply,” she said. “We do it a little bit differently, we give it to them after the first semester - we give to two to up to five students depending on the year.”
Following the annual event, a block party was held in Veteran’s Park on Railroad Avenue from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. This year, there was a band, a food truck, additional food and entertainment.
McGrail thanked the area sponsors, many of which generously donate year-after-year. She said not only is the day special, but the woman the event is in memory for.
“She was such a special person,” she said of her mother. “She was the the life of the party and would give anything to anyone.”
Following the event, McGrail said overall, it was a “great day.”
“The weather was perfect and any day that we can get people together, have a good time and raise money for students at college is a success.”
According to the Stamford resident, 125 individuals completed the race.
Owen Kallen clinched the top spot at first place, while Henry Maher came in at second place.
