COBLESKILL - On Monday evening, the CRCS Board of Education commented on the arrest of special education teacher Aaron Witkowski in late April on the charges of second-degree harassment and endangering the welfare of a child.
According to previous reports, Mr. Witkowski allegedly pinned an eight-year-old student down against a classroom table before dragging them toward the principal’s office by force.
While the child was not injured during the altercation, the incident warranted a police investigation and Mr. Witkowski was placed on administrative leave on April 22nd, which he remains on to this day.
Commenting on the arrest on Monday, Superintendent Matthew Sickles confirmed that the initial report to the police was placed by the district itself under reasonable suspicion of child abuse in an educational setting.
“As this is an ongoing police investigation, the district is not able to comment further on the details of the situation,” he said. “We understand how upsetting this situation is for our families, as we value the trust they place in us every day.”
“The health, safety and welfare of our children are our top priorities, and we will continue to work together as a community to fulfill that responsibility.”
“We will communicate what we can, when we can, in consultation with the Cobleskill police department,” Superintendent Sickles concluded.
