SCHOHARIE - The first Schoharie community fest will take place on Wednesday, June 24 from 4 to 7pm at Schoharie Central school. The rain date will be Thursday, June 25.
Numerous agencies and groups have committed their time and several events have been set, music teacher Carrie Styles told school board members at their April 23 meeting.
The event will kick off summer with family, friends and neighbors. They will be free hotdogs, strawberry shortcake, and Stewart’s ice cream cones, among other food and offerings.
Events include a free-throw contest, chalk drawing, a Pickleball tournament, a free Zumba class, free food, and food trucks for food to purchase. In addition there will be information on job skills a Wildlife Alive birds of prey, story time, and college/career fair, which will include Russell Sage, HVCC, FMCC, Maria College HCCC, US Army, and CTE programs. You can also get information on mental health, Workforce Solutions, SEEC, the Schoharie Free library and First New York. Live music will be provided by the North Allen Street Duo. Contributions were made by Sterling insurance and Stewart's Shops.
Ms. Styles said that of last week, the following groups and events have been set:
* Six local colleges participating in a college fair.
* Many local organizations (fire departments providing education station/with fire trucks on site, Schoharie Promotional Association, Christ the Shepherd Lutheran, Schoharie County Youth Bureau, Joshua Project).
* Schoharie Teachers Association (SCS teacher's union members are doing storytime on the half hours).
* Schoharie Free library is having a table to market summer programming.
* SEEC is having a table to market hosting the UAlbany Tech Roadshow and possibly another event.
* EPTSO-Little Free Library and a craft.
* Workforce Solutions.
* Schoharie Sunshine Fair (marketing and seeking employees).
* BOCES/CTE feature on the trades/heavy equipment on site to view.
* U.S. Army Table (with an interactive physical challenge at their station).
* S&H Bicycle is going to do a monkey/obstacle bike course at the track along with some bike safety.
* Free Zumba class by ZJ Zumba.
* Free Yoga class by Nichole McBride.
* First New York for a financial literacy table.
* SCS Friends of Fine Arts-activity station.
* Wildlife Alive (raptors/animal rescue).
* Schoharie Sheriff's Department.
* SCS Family Engagement-hosting the NYPA for hands-on science projects and promoting summer enrichment programs for families.
* ELA and Math teachers promoting summer enrichment opportunities.
* Schoharie Community Pool-marketing lessons/programs.
* Schoharie County Dept. Health (marketing their car seat program, Community Hub Youth Group, Special Needs Programs).
* Mental health awareness station-from MAHANYS.
* Pickleball tournament to support Marathon for a Better Life.
* Free throw tournament for all ages (with prizes).
* Two food trucks.
* North Allen Duo (live band).
* Free "clothes thrift shopping" by SCS Best Buddies club.
* The Crafting and Giving Club is having a craft station.
* Stewart's Shops is bringing their cart and has donated 500 servings of ice cream.
* Schoharie Promotional Association (marketing Lily fest and providing strawberry shortcake in combination with other organizations).
* Sidewalk Chalk Art-Run by the Youth Belonging Leadership Team.
"We're still planning to engage with more organizations, businesses and farms and anticipate more participation from those in addition to other student organizations at SCS," Ms. Styles said. "We were fortunate (and grateful) to acquire funding to host Wildlife Alive from the Sterling Foundation branch of Sterling Insurance."
SCS is also offering free hot dogs and watermelon to ensure that local families can attend and have some free food.
