SCHOHARIE - The Schoharie Valley Garden Club is pleased to recognize the July Garden of the Month recipients, Nancy Conway and Jeff Barmen, whose dedication and love of gardening are evident throughout their property.

Since purchasing their home in 2020, Nancy and Jeff have devoted countless hours to restoring, improving, and beautifying both their home and gardens. Their discovery of canna lilies a few years ago inspired a striking focal point at the front entrance, where the colorful blooms are displayed in a large container each summer. A charming trellis adorned with a hanging basket and climbing morning glories adds even more character and welcomes visitors to their home.

Their beautifully maintained landscape features peonies, hostas, dahlias, ornamental grasses, shrubs, and a variety of perennials, all thoughtfully arranged around a stately evergreen that frames the house.

When a mature tree had to be removed because it was rotting, Nancy and Jeff transformed what could have been an eyesore into one of the garden’s most attractive features. The remaining stump became the centerpiece of a new perennial garden that is now thriving and draws the eye with its beauty and creativity.

In Nancy’s words:

“We decided last year to add a perennial garden around the stump. We were so pleased this year when all of our plants thrived. Our house is usually known for our golden retriever, Moses, who loves people-watching in our yard, but he’ll have to share the spotlight with our new award—at least for this month.”
