DELHI - Delaware Academy Central School District counselors presented the school year's comprehensive program. The program included slides outlining the New York State Portrait of a Graduate (PNG) program adopted in July 2025. The program adjusts graduation requirements and eliminates multiple diploma options. Instead, students graduating in 2028 and beyond will receive one type of diploma and can earn special seals. PNG eliminates Regents exam requirements and establishes multiple pathways for students, including traditional exams, projects, or work-based learning.
Despite two years of discussion, Superintendent Carey Shultz said many unknowns remain. He noted a major issue is how to track each individual pathway while keeping in line with other districts. He explained that each district naturally has varied opportunities for students based on budgets and class size.
Shultz said the state is struggling with the question of federal funding, which is based on testing and achievement currently. In addition, he believes there is a disconnect between Commissioner Dr. Betty Rosa and Governor Kathy Hochul, which could change the program's rollout.
In conclusion, Shultz said the district is paying close attention to the discussion and gathering information where they can. The change does not affect current seniors.
