STAMFORD - Backed by stellar pitching, timely hitting and solid defense, the Margaretville Telephone Company (MTC) Yankees took down the M+M Motors Braves in a final score of 6-2 last Tuesday night under the lights in Stamford to capture their second title in a row in the Catskill Mountain Little League (CMLL) Majors Division.
After pre-game words of encouragement were delivered by local Gilboa-Conesville-Roxbury Varsity Baseball Coach, Mike Faulkner, the game got locked in a pitcher’s duel between the Yanks’ lefty, Wyatt Flachs and the Braves’ ace, Logan Scully. No scores were made through the first three frames until Robbie VanEtten broke open the tie with a two-run triple with one out in the top of the fourth. The scoring ended there for the Braves and swung the momentum toward the Yanks when VanEtten was thrown out at home attempting to score on a pop-up for a double play to end the inning.
The Yanks answered back quickly plating four runs in the bottom of the fourth including an RBI single from Matteo Abbatine and a two-run double to deep center field by Hayden Carman.
Flachs earned the win for Yankees having surrendered only three hits and two runs over five and two-thirds innings, striking out 11 and walking two.
