MIDDLEBURGH - The Village of Middleburgh is getting tougher on sex offenders who move into the village.
Board members Monday night approved a resolution supporting state legislation putting residency restrictions on sex offenders near victims and schools.
About a month ago, Trustee Amanda Fernandez said, a resident notified her that a Level 3 sex offender was living across the street from the entrance to the elementary school. She called the Sheriff's office and was told the sex offender was released with no restrictions and can leave near a school. Level 2 or 3 sex offenders are more likely to offend again than a Level 1 offender, she noted.
"I'm very concerned," Trustee Fernandez said. Residents have to "truly remain vigilant for now."
She also contacted state Assemblyman Chris Tague's office and was told legislation has been introduced that would prohibit Level 2 and 3 sex offenders from living within 1,500 feet of their victims or school grounds, and from attending any school-related events and activities. The bill has been introduced in the state Senate by Senator Peter Oberacker and in the assembly by Assemblyman Tague.
Mayor Tim Knight said the legislature has been in committee before and it could take one to two years to be passed.
"It should be done," he added.
The village resolution states that the village board is supporting the state laws "in order to create safer neighborhoods not only in the Village of Middleburgh but throughout the State of New York for school children and families alike."
