Tuesday evening, August 4th, Maggie, Pip, Rusty, Scout, and I headed to Veterans Memorial Park in Greenville for the Community Partners of Greenville's free summer concert series. The evening's entertainment was the country-rock band "In The Dust", and the park was already filling up with families, neighbors, lawn chairs, food, and plenty of summer fun. With music and ice cream involved, I knew this was going to be an evening the Eagle Family would enjoy!
As soon as the music started, Scout disappeared into the crowd like he'd been shot out of a cannon. Rusty was more interested in studying the band's equipment and trying to figure out how everything worked. Pip, meanwhile, was dancing and taking notes for her notebook. She told me she was "researching what makes a great summer concert." I told her I had already done that research years ago. Her scientific conclusion? Dad dances funny. I strongly disagree with that professional assessment.
The best part of these concerts isn't just the music—it's seeing the community come together. Families, friends, and neighbors were relaxing in the park, enjoying the warm summer evening and listening to some great country-rock. There was food, ice cream, laughter, and plenty of dancing. Even Maggie and I joined in a little. I maintain that what I was doing was not dancing, but rather an advanced form of rhythmic newspaper reporting!
As the sun began to set, we watched the final songs and soaked in one of those wonderful Catskill summer evenings that you wish could last forever. Pip had her notebook full, Rusty had questions about the sound system, and Scout was already wondering when the next adventure would be. Moments like this are what make our hometowns special—free music, good neighbors, family, and a beautiful summer evening together.
In The Dust gave Greenville a terrific night of music, and the Community Partners of Greenville once again showed what hometown spirit is all about. From this Mountain Eagle's point of view, it doesn't get much better than enjoying great music with your family right here in our own backyard.
