In Memory of Stephanie Rubin-Ruquet

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Stephanie Rubin-Ruquet. Stephanie passed away on July 2nd at Ellis Hospital at the age of 82. Her family was with her at the end. She is survived by her two brothers, a sister-in-law, several cousins, nieces and nephews, stepchildren, step grandchildren, and family in Australia.

There will be a “Celebration of Stephanie’s Life” in the fall and arrangements will be publicized.

Prior to her moving to Jefferson with her husband, Kenny (dec), Stephanie was a children’s librarian at the Sayville Public Library.  After retirement Stephanie became a valuable member of the Jefferson Historical Society, serving as Treasurer or Co-Treasurer since 2009. Her dedication to the Society was extraordinary. Since the purchase of Judd Hall in December 2017, she led the organization’s annual yard sales, which became an important source of financial support while also providing a valued service to the community.

Stephanie's passion for history and meticulous research were evident in everything she did. Years of research into Jefferson's Civil War soldiers culminated in her book, Fallen Heroes: The Civil War Dead of the Town of Jefferson, Schoharie County, New York. Just hours before she was admitted to the hospital, she delivered a remarkable presentation based on that research. It was a fitting demonstration of her commitment to preserving and sharing Jefferson's history.

Her service extended well beyond the Historical Society. Stephanie served on the Stamford Public Library Board of Trustees, the Schoharie County Historical Society and the Jefferson Heritage Day Committee, and she was a regular volunteer at the Jefferson Thrift Shop. She gave generously of her time, talents, and energy to organizations that enriched the lives of so many.

Stephanie's knowledge, dedication, friendship, and quiet generosity will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with her. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with her family during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jefferson Historical Society, PO Box 143, Jefferson, NY 12093.
