Schoharie (Schoharie County): Arlene Given Price, 84, died on July 23 at Albany Medical Center, after a brief illness.
Arlene was born September 29, 1941, in Schenectady, NY, the daughter of Robert Winslow Given and Ella Muller Given. Arlene was predeceased by her husband, Robert Lohman Price, and is survived by her son Robert Given Price (Ida) of Hudson, New Hampshire; her daughters, Joanna Price Rusk (James) of Rhinebeck, New York, and Margaret (Peggy) Susanna Price, of Schoharie; her sister, Karen Muller of Chicago; and nieces Catherine and Martha Muller, also of Chicago. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Tanis Given Price of Salem, MA ; Gabriel William Price of Merrimack, NH; and Amelia Price Rusk of Rhinebeck, NY, as well as her brother-in-law and sister-in law, Dr. Richard (Ellen) Price of San Francisco.
Arlene graduated from Schoharie Central School in 1959, and from Russell Sage College, Troy, NY in 1963, with a degree in elementary education.
On January 28, 1967, she and Robert were married in Schoharie. They raised their family in Boxford, Massachusetts, and retired to Arlene's childhood home in Schoharie in 2006.
Arlene was a teacher. Through high school and college, she taught Sunday school and worked as a camp counselor. She began her formal teaching career in Wappingers Falls, NY, then East Greenbush, NY. For many years, she taught fourth grade at Spofford Pond Elementary School in Boxford. In 2000, the Massachusetts Council for the Social Studies awarded her the Outstanding Massachusetts Elementary Social Studies Teacher of the Year. After her retirement, she worked with others in the community to establish the Schoharie Community Day Camp, serving as its morning director for many years, and in 2016, the much-needed Schoharie Christian After School Program.
Arlene served the community in which she lived: as a Sunday School teacher, a Girl Scout leader for 17 years, as board member at her church, as a trustee of the Schoharie Free Library, as board member of the Schoharie Colonial Heritage Association, and Food Pantry volunteer
She and Bob enjoyed travel, especially by train or boat, and she visited every state except South Dakota. Arlene loved reading and gardening, walks with her dogs, and she was always happy to have guests at her home, especially family.
A memorial service for Arlene will be held at the Schoharie United Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 15. Donations in her memory may be made to the Schoharie United Presbyterian Church, the Schoharie Colonial Heritage Association, or another charity of choice.
