In Memory of Herbert J. Terns

Herbert J. Terns, 82, of Lehigh Acres, Florida, passed away on March 20.

Herb was born in 1944 in Kingston, the son of Ray and Iva Terns (Finley.) He graduated from Hunter-Tannersville Central School before serving in the United States Navy as a boatswain’s mate, including a tour in Vietnam, before being honorably discharged.

A brief marriage in his 20s gave him his son, Herb J. Terns, Jr. Herb shared most of his life with his longtime, loving companion, Betty Lou Palmer. The sound of his jokes and her laughter filled their Florida home for nearly 40 years.

Herb held a variety of positions in golfing both in Florida and in the Catskill Mountains and Hudson Valley of his native New York. He was an especially gifted teacher who enjoyed helping others and sharing his love of the sport.

Those remaining to cherish Herb’s memory include his partner, Betty Lou Palmer; his son, Herb Terns Jr. (Gillian); stepdaughters, Melissa Dibbell, Michele Acosta, and Stephanie Palmer; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Eliana, Grace Joy, Holly, Nakita, Nicholas, Wyatt; nieces Lori Clinton-Holmquist, Leslie Clinton and Terry Clinton,

He loved playing, watching, reading and talking about golf, as well as searching for hidden treasures with his metal detector and spending time with the many dogs that filled his life.

A memorial service will be held at the Tannersville Methodist Church at 5942 Main St., Tannersville, NY on May 17th at 3 PM
