The Landis Arboretum is a private, not-for-profit organization that supports a public garden incorporating hundreds of acres in Schoharie and Montgomery Counties of New York State. The people of Landis are what have kept it vibrant and alive for 75 years.
Arboretum founder Fred Lape began developing the Arboretum in the 1950s on Oak Nose Farm, his family homestead. With the support of a bequest from friend and colleague George Landis, Fred strove to grow every species of woody plant from temperate regions around the world that would survive in the hills of Schoharie County.
Open 365 days a year, 7am-7pm.

About the Arboretum
Forty acres of the Arboretum are developed with plantings of trees, shrubs, and herbaceous perennials. A seasonal favorite of our visitors is the Van Loveland Perennial Garden at the old Farmhouse. The remainder of the property consists of natural areas, woodlands, open fields, wetlands, and more than 8 miles of trails. Horticultural features include The Native Plant Trail, a labeled collection of nearly all the trees, shrubs, and vines native to New York State, as well as collections of notable trees, flowering ornamental trees and shrubs, conifers and oaks, and "tough trees for tough sites." Near the Native Plant Trail lies the Fern Glen, home to a wonderful collection of native ferns.
Two old growth forests and additional natural areas representing various stages of succession can be found at the Arboretum. Landis has recently been inducted in the Old Growth Forest Network. Interpretive signage, including QR codes and plaques, aids visitors in their enjoyment and understanding of the collections and ecosystems of the Arboretum. Come visit us for a few hours, or stay for the day!
Landis is home to some interesting sculpture, like our resident dinosaur lurking near the pond behind the barn. Be sure to check out the two "photo op" stations at the back of the barn, where you can don the antlers of a mighty stag or the wings of a Monarch butterfly.
Your visit is not complete without spending tranquil moments at the Shanti Vun Meditation Garden, anchored by a welcoming pavilion, a lovely pond, and the soothing sounds of our waterfall. This beautiful garden is framed by a forest of young birch trees and a nearby labyrinth. With picnic tables to enjoy your lunch or just a quiet moment of reflection, the Meditation Garden is the perfect place to begin or end your visit to Landis.
Plant Sales
Twice each year, Landis hosts one of the best plant sales you'll find, enhanced by wonderful baked goods. Our frequent shoppers know that we also throw open the doors of “Barn and Nobles” our Bookstore in the Barn, chock full of books (many about gardening and related topics, but also fiction, philosophy, fun . . . you name it!)
Our Spring sale is the weekend after Mother's Day, the perfect time to plant for the beginning of the growing season.
The Fall sale is the weekend after Labor Day. Seasoned gardeners know that fall is a wonderful time to plant perennials.
Both sales feature selections from respected local consignors, plants grown and tenderly potted up at home by Landis volunteers, and our own “Landis Grown” plants from our greenhouse. We feature many native plants, and often have a "theme" plant type for the spring sale.
Both sales begin with a Pick of the Pots (POPS) preview sale and party for Arboretum members on the Friday evening before the sale weekend (check out Activity Calendar for times). If you are not currently a member, we will happily help you join at the gate! The sale continues on Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm in both seasons.

Weddings at Landis
Whether you choose to be married beside the Meadow Pond, on the hill by the Meeting House overlooking the beautiful valley, in the Van Loveland Perennial Gardens, in the shade of the beech tree by our Farm House, or in a hidden glade in the Upper Forest, you can be sure a Landis wedding will be uniquely yours.
Our rental package includes:
- A large mortise & tenon Adirondack Pavilion with electricity, alongside a beautiful pond, all nicely landscaped.
- Large food prep area.
- Wrap-around deck with adjacent patio.
- Three accessible restrooms.
- Accessible indoor rustic barn-like event space.
- Changing rooms.
- A variety of tables and chairs.
- Large parking area.
- Level area for large party tents.
Memorials and Celebrations
The Meeting House Complex offers you a rustic and relaxing, green atmosphere to hold your gatherings. Large or small, inside or outside, house catered or not.
Corporate Functions
For your business, the Meeting House Complex offers casual surroundings for your meetings. It has 2 smaller rooms for breakout groups plus the outside deck area can also be used for additional tables and chairs. The deck and patio is a perfect place for a catered lunch offering an amazing view of nature and the surrounding valley.
