Farmers, Backbone of America - Abba's Acres

RICHMONDVILLE — Family and farmer, on Abba's Acres the family of Jerri and Matthew Betsinger have gotten it all together with their children, Lauren, Daniel and Joshua.

Stepping back to the year 2010/2011, a Betsinger family decision was made to purchase Jerri’s grandparents property of 8 acres and a house in Richmondville. From that point on, the move for this family to go forward and build a sustainable farm has proven to be successful.

Trial and error, of course, always plays a role in starting a new venture and so it was with the Betsinger family. The first live purchase for Abba's Acres was a lucky dozen of chickens and roosters.

Lucky, of course, that 50 % of those chickens turned out to be laying hens and not roosters, it could have been 100% roosters. So it goes on the farm that the law of multiplication kicks in when 12 laying hens turn into 50 laying hens.

It didn’t take long back in 2012 when friends and neighbors turned into buying customers for their fine feathered friends and produce. And that is the long and short of the farm called Abba's Acres from Richmondville in Schoharie County. Eventually ducks, turkeys, guineas, and, of course, chicken pullets, all pasture raised, were key parts of the farm. Abba's Acres is pleased to say that the Le Coq Rico restaurant in Manhattan is a very happy customer of Abba's Acres.

As the farm has grown, so has the children of Jerri and Matthew. Daniel has learned the art of making syrup, not only maple syrup but also hickory syrup. And Joshua’s passion is mingling with the honey bees for their honey and bees wax candles. Lauren’s specialty includes milk from Nigerian Dwarf goats. If you have a sweet tooth for fudge, muffins and cookies with the makings of goat milk, stop by one of the farmers markets that Abba's Acres attends.

Here are some of the following farmers markets that are attended by Abba's Acres-check them out!: Delhi, Schoharie Maple Festival, Stormville Flea Market, and Lake George. Check out their Facebook book account for their current events. Enjoy!
