Anti-Rent War on Blenheim Hill

The Jefferson Historical Society recently presented the film Calico Rebellion, highlighting the Anti-Rent War in Andes, New York. Bringing that conflict closer to home, Dr. Susan Harwood will discuss the Anti-Rent War as it unfolded on Blenheim Hill in Schoharie County.

Her presentation will take place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 13, at Judd Hall, 163 Main Street, Jefferson.

The Anti-Rent War grew out of a feudal-like system in which wealthy landowners controlled vast tracts of land and collected rents from farmers. These farmers cleared and developed the land but had little hope of ever owning the property they worked.

The Blenheim Patent was controlled by the Van Rensselaer family. By 1839, conflicts over the land system and rent collection were intensifying, and farmers increasingly resisted what they considered oppressive practices. Local families prominently involved in the conflict included the Curtis, Wood, Sage, Champlin, and Peaslee families.

The original Brimstone Methodist Church became an important site during the conflict. It served as a gathering place for farmers resisting rent collection and, at other times, as a temporary prison for some of those same individuals after they were captured by law enforcement.

Dr. Harwood will describe some of the key local individuals involved in the rebellion and the places where important events occurred. She will also provide a tour guide for those who would like to independently visit significant sites associated with the Anti-Rent War on Blenheim Hill.

This event is free and open to the public.
