MIDDLEBURGH - The Village of Middleburgh will be paving two streets and an alleyway this summer.

Village board members earlier this month approved bids to pave Sheldon and Scribner avenues as well as Van Dyke Alley. The winning bid was from Northeast Asphalt Services for $67,000.

The milling and paving of Sheldon Avenue will cost $21,500 while the milling and paving of Scribner will cost $40,000. Paving of the alley will be $3,200. The total cost includes $2,000 for a tack coat option will helps adherence.

The village received two other bids for $67,760 and $76,945.

Street Superintendent Cole Keyser noted the higher prices for paving, mirroring higher oil prices.

Van Dyke Alleyway, between the Middleburgh Hardware Store and The Country Cafe, is an important thoroughfare which has seen more traffic since Railroad Avenue has been made one-way, Mr. Keyser said.

The DPW will communicate with residents for when road construction is scheduled for later this summer.

Between cost of materials and labor, the estimated cost of road improvements this year will be $67,000. If the village's allotment of CHIPs funding remains flat at $63,500 – which will be known once the 2026-27 budget is approved – the village’s share will be $3,500.

The final amount for this year will depend on budget negotiations between the Governor and Legislature, in the final state budget.

Last year, the village received quotes for the milling and paving Scribner Avenue for $26,750, and paving Sheldon Avenue for $15,195.

The village is tentatively planning to make improvements to Baker Avenue and Railroad Avenue next year, officials said.
