VOICES FROM THE CEMETERY

Come help us celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary! After the Revolutionary War, Jefferson became a destination for many New England soldiers and their families.. New England was becoming over-settled, land was scarce, and New York offered large, inexpensive tracts of land that had been confiscated from Tories! The promise of cheap land was hard to resist – and so they came.
We know of at least 43 Rev War veterans who are buried in various Jefferson cemeteries. Marked graves remain for ten of the eleven veterans who were buried in the Old Jefferson Burying Ground. Most of them raised families here, and some of their descendants (you?) still live here.
You can hear their stories at Judd Hall, 163 Main Street in Jefferson on Saturday, Sept. 26th at 3:00 PM. Costumed reenactors will portray ten of the soldiers or their wives, sharing stories of their lives, their involvement in the Revolutionary War, and their years in Jefferson.
Presenters for this program will include Paul Trotta, Lyndia Hauser, Bob Glas, Bonnie Dailey, Vic DiSanto, Jim Wolford, Kathy Bulka, Ted Shuart, Joe Henry, and Phil Dolensek.
Following the presentation, attendees will have the option to visit the Old Jefferson Burying Ground. Golf carts will be available to help with the visit, for anyone who would like a lift down the trail to the cemetery and back.
This project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by CREATE Council on the Arts.
The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
